What is Medical Surveillance? Does Your Immigration Medical Centre Conduct Medical Surveillance Exams?
What is Medical Surveillance?
Medical surveillance is a follow-up program managed by the public health authorities in Canada in order to monitor specific medical conditions. Currently, IRCC only conducts medical surveillance for tuberculosis (TB). If you were assessed as having inactive tuberculosis on your immigration medical exam (IME), you may be required to complete a medical check-up with a physician upon arrival in Canada.
In order to start the medical surveillance process, you must update your contact information with the Public Health Liaison Unit at IRCC by contacting [email protected]. Make sure to include your full name, unique client identifier (UCI), email address, phone number in Canada, and home address in Canada. The public health authority will then contact you to follow up with you. You must wait for the public health authority to contact you. During this time, if you experience any signs or symptoms of active tuberculosis, please see a doctor as soon as possible.
Once you are contacted for a medical surveillance appointment, make sure to attend. Remember, completing your medical surveillance is a condition of your status in Canada. As such, you must ensure you comply with the process and complete the requirement as soon as possible. Additional information on the medical surveillance process can be found on the official IRCC website.
Does Your Clinic Conduct Medical Surveillance Exams?
At Immigration Medical Centre, we perform the Immigration Medical Exam (IME) required by IRCC. Please note, we do not conduct medical surveillance. Once your IME is complete and submitted, any medical surveillance is handled by public health authorities in Canada. However, if you have received an email from IRCC requesting additional tests, please contact our clinic and provide your IME number, as this may indicate a furtherance on your file. A furtherance means that IRCC requires additional medical tests or information to complete your medical exam.
Our clinic can help you through the Immigration Medical Exam (IME), including scheduling, tests, and documentation. If your medical exam findings trigger further examinations, IRCC will contact you directly. If IRCC asks you to see a panel physician, please contact us as soon as possible and our clinic will help you with this process.
