Do I Need to Send the Results of My Immigration Medical Exam to IRCC Myself ?
A frequently asked question at our clinic is: “Do I need to send the results of my Immigration Medical Exam (IME) to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) myself?” The short answer is no. However it is important to retain proof of your medical exams, and in some cases you would need to send the proof of the medicals to IRCC.
Results of the Medical Exam vs. Proof of the Medical Exam
The results of the medical exam include lab reports, X-ray findings, physical assessments, and other health information. These results are handled entirely by the clinic and the panel physician is the one responsible for submitting all medical results directly to IRCC through a secure online system. You will not receive these detailed medical results in your hand (unless you purchase a copy of your results for $15) for your personal records, and you do not need to upload them anywhere.
On the other hand, the proof of your medical exam (also called Information Sheet) is a one-page document, front and back, that is provided to you by the clinic after your medical exam. It shows your IME or UMI number, the date and location of your exam, and the fact that your exam has been completed. This is not the same as the medical results. The Information Sheet is proof that you completed the exam.

Who Uploads the Results of the Medical Exam?
The panel physician, the doctor approved by IRCC to perform your Immigration Medical Exam, is the one responsible for submitting all the results of the medical exam directly to IRCC through a secure online system called eMedical.
Who Uploads the Proof of the Medical Exam?
Whether or not you need to upload the proof of the medical exam depends on your situation.
- If you have a UMI (unique medical identifier) number
- You completed an upfront medical, in order to apply for permit applications, work permit applications, visitor visa extension as well as Permanent Residence applications, etc.
- You must upload your proof of medical exam (Information Sheet), front and back, to the IRCC portal.
- If you have an IME (immigration medical examination) number,
- You applied for immigration process through IRCC first (for Permanent Residence, a Visitor Visa extension, or as a refugee claimant, etc) and you are requested to complete the IMM 1017 medical examination.
- You do not need to upload your proof of medical exam to IRCC.
In either case, you should keep a copy of your proof of medical exam (Information Sheet) for your own records. It contains your IME/UMI number and other important details that may be useful if IRCC asks for follow-up. If you’re unsure whether your exam was considered “upfront” or based on an IRCC request, check whether you received an IMM 1017 form similar to a sample form below.
If you received the IMM 1017 form and have an IME number, you don’t need to upload it through the IRCC portal. If you have a UMI number, you are completing an upfront medical exam and you must upload your proof of medical exam to the IRCC portal.
