IRCC Asked Me to Complete an Immigration Medical Exam (IME): What Happens Next?

Nov 7, 2025

You might be asked to complete an Immigration Medical Exam (IME) by IRCC for various reasons, such as, applying for permanent residence, extending a work or study permit, removing work restrictions from your current work permit, and/or because IRCC sent you a medical form (IMM 1017) after reviewing your application. Don’t be nervous about your medical exam! Here is a step-by-step guide on what to expect and how to prepare for the medical exam.

1. Book an appointment

If you are completing an IME before submitting your application, this is called an upfront medical exam. You can get an upfront exam if you are applying to visit, work or study. If you do the exam after submitting your application for PR or visitor visa extension, IRCC will send you instructions on how to complete it and the associated medical exam form (IMM 1017). Make sure to read the instructions carefully and follow them as described. Please note that if you have received the IMM 1017, you are given 30 days to complete your Immigration Medical Exam. It is important that you book your IME appointment as soon as possible and complete your IME with an approved Panel clinic such as our IRCC approved panel clinic at Immigration Medical Centre.

2. What to bring to your appointment

When attending your medical exam appointment, you should bring;

  • Your passport (or other accepted identification)
  • IMM 1017E or IMM1020E medical report form, if IRCC sent it to you
  • Any medical reports or test results for past or existing conditions
  • A list of your current medications

3. What to expect for your appointment

When you arrive, the clinic staff will check your identification to confirm your identity. You will fill out a medical history questionnaire about your past or current conditions and any medications you take.

The clinic will take your photo and upload it to the eMedical system. You do not need to bring in any pictures. The clinic staff will also measure your height and weight. The doctor or clinic staff will conduct the medical examination which may include checking your hearing and vision, listening to your heart and lungs, feeling your abdomen, checking how your limbs move, or looking at your skin.

The clinic staff will also collect your blood sample for testing. Ensure you are hydrated for an easier blood draw process. Children the age of 14 or younger are exempt from blood tests.

After the blood work and exam are finished, you will be sent for an X-ray. At our clinic, the X-ray facility is conveniently located in the same building, ensuring a smooth process and quick completion of your exam. If you are pregnant, you may choose to postpone your X-ray until after delivery or proceed at the time of your exam. The panel physician will discuss your options with you. Children the age of 10 or younger are exempt from X-ray. You do not need to book an appointment separately for the X-ray clinic, as they operate only on a walk-in basis.

4. What happens after the exam?

The panel physician submits your report directly to IRCC. You will receive a confirmation document as proof that you completed your medical exam. This is also called the eMedical information sheet. Keep this document safely, as you may need it in the future. It takes around 7-10 business days for our clinic to submit your results to IRCC. Records are valid for 12 months. If IRCC makes a decision after that, you may need another exam.
