What IDs to bring for IME?
What Forms of ID Are Acceptable for Your Immigration Medical Exam?
When coming in for your Immigration Medical Examination (IME), one of the most common questions we receive is: What form of identification is acceptable? What if my passport is expired or about to expire? Here is everything you need to know before your appointment.
IRCC requires that you bring original, valid identification to your IME appointment. The most preferred and widely accepted document is your Original Passport. Other acceptable documents include: Canadian government-issued driver’s license, National ID card, Refugee travel document, and Refugee protection claimant.
What if my Passport is Near Expiry?
If your passport is close to expiring, don’t worry. It is still considered valid as long as it hasn’t passed the expiry date and you can still use it for your IME. In general, IRCC usually accepts passports that have been expired for less than 1 year. If the passport has been expired for more than 1 year, IRCC may raise concerns about verifying your identity. If your passport is expired or nearing expiry, we strongly recommend that you bring your most current, valid passport.
What if I Have a New Passport but my Medical Report (IME) Form Lists the Old One?
This is a common scenario. Let’s say you applied for immigration with your old passport, and recently got a new passport before your IME. In this case, you just need to bring your new passport. This allows us to update your passport details in the system during your medical exam. It’s the best way to keep your application consistent and avoid delays.
As a rule of thumb, make sure to bring the most up-to-date, valid passport available. If you have more than one passport, bring them all to help confirm your identity.
